Real-life stories of organ and tissue donation (Midwest Transplant Network, Kansas and Missouri)

Joe Rethford

Riding motorcycles and playing guitar are two of Joe’s favorite hobbies – hobbies he didn’t think he’d ever be able to enjoy again after falling from a ladder and suffering compound fractures in both wrists.

Thanks to donor tissue used for reconstruction, extensive physical therapy and the help of his doctors, Joe was back on his bike and playing guitar within two years. Joe added that he owes much of his success to his wife of 27 years, who selflessly gave him use of her hands as if they were his own throughout recovery.

“You just look at life and what is important to you differently after an accident like that,” said Joe.
